Govt. To Supply Of PDS Rice In Packets
Food Minister Mr. EV Velu said works were on for supplying rice meant for the Public Distribution System (PDS) in packets and it would be introduced in Chennai on a trial basis soon.
He said the State Government has been providing PDS rice at a subsidized price to benefit the poor. If the rice had to be sold in packets, then its cost would go up, he added.
However, some corporate houses had come forward to sponsor the expenditure involved in packing the rice. As such, the government had decided to introduce the supply of packaged rice in some ration shops in Chennai first and after considering the pros and cons, it would decide on extending the same to other parts of the State, he said.
