Ladies Special Buses Planned In All Districts
Transport Minister Mr. KN Nehru said his department was taking steps to operate ladies special buses in all the districts in the state.
Replying to a query during question hour in the State Assembly, Mr. Nehru said the DMK Government after it came back to power in May last year, had approved 400 new bus routes in addition to the existing 16,200 routes.
“Out of the 2,700 routes in Chennai, buses were operated in only about 2,250 routes during the previous AIADMK regime and ladies special buses were also not in operation during their rule”, the minister said.
Stating that Chief Minister Mr. M Karunanidhi had ordered the procurement of 200 ultra-deluxe buses and 2,230 regular buses, of which 831were already inducted into service, he said. For the MTC alone, the government had sanctioned 480 new buses this year, of which 176 were introduced so far.
“Introduction of new buses and new routes led to the increase in daily collection of the MTC to Rs.1.15 crore now from Rs.91 lakh”, Mr. Nehru claimed.
