A Great Educationist And Social Worker
Dr. Oscar C. Nigil, a resident of Sivaganga Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai – 34 is a great educationist and a social worker. He completed his First Class Master Degree in Economics at University of Madras, Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the Madurai Kamaraj University, M.Phil at Loyola College and did his Ph.D in economics at University of Madras. Dr. Oscar Nigli has been serving as a faculty of Loyola College, a premier institution from 1978 by handling graduate, post-graduate and research classes in economics. He has produced a number of M.Phils and guided scores of projects at the post-graduate and under-graduate levels.
Dr Oscar told the Chennai Plus reporter that he is interested in promoting research in the area of international trade, marketing in the context of India’s current liberalization scenario. He is also interested in making a comparative study of various countries’ subsidies and government expenditure such that policy makers would benefit from free market experience.
Dr. Oscar was instrumental in organizing state, national and international level symposiums. He has organized various programmes for slums, literacy programmes and awareness programmes on health, hygiene and sanitation. Dr. Oscar has intervened and settled issues concerning Anglo-Indian Schools and presided over school functions of leading Anglo Indian schools. He has been associated with the All India Anglo Indian Association for over a long period of time.
Dr. Oscar has attended national and international conferences. He served as examiner for various colleges and universities and has given informative guest lectures and addressed various organizations including Rotary Clubs. He is also serving in the examinations and appeals committee, research committee at Loyola College.
Speaking to Chennai Plus, Dr. Oscar Nigil said that as dean of students he looked after over 3300 students of Loyola College ranging from disciplinary problems to various students’ activities. He has organized inter-collegiate cultural programmes in Loyola College from down-sterling to ovations. He also has co-ordinated activities of N.S.S, Loyola Extension Awareness Programme, NCC, AISEC, French Acronym for Association of Students in Economics, Management, Student’s Union, Rotaract, etc., Dr. Oscar has also provided good student amenities, free noon meals scheme, free book for poor students. Dr. Oscar is currently serving as Director of Foreign Desk at Loyola College.
Dr. Oscar is very good in athletics and hockey. He is keenly interested in boxing, aerobics, yoga, swimming, body building. He was also the Master of Ceremonies for various sports meets. Dr. Oscar is currently the nominated MLA of the Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly representing the Anglo-Indian Community.
