Sir,
Chennai Corporation authorities who want to beautify Elliots beach should also pay attention to the overflowing sewage water near Velankanni Church in Besant Nagar. Sewage water overflows very frequently and this was particularly bad on Monday evening (3.11.2008), when so many people had to walk on the sewage sludge on the road. A little further away from the beach, on the same day, sewage has been overflowing on the fourth cross street in Besant Nagar near Kakkan colony. Large number of people including school going children and senior citizens have no alternative other than stepping into the sewage water to cross the road.Near this Fourth cross street is the cremation ground where the dense smoke from the chimney is often seen spreading nauseating smell everywhere. On the whole, the conditions in Besant Nagar , supposed to be a modern residential locality , has become unhygienic, with grim possibilities of spreading contagious disease amongst the residents. These conditions should be seen to be believed. Near the Velankanni church, I saw so many people helplessly stepping on to the sewage water, feeling helpless. such matters cannot be unknown to the corporation authorities who have no hesitation in spending lakhs of rupees in the so called beautification scheme of Elliots beach.
Thanks
