A Wonderful Australian Experience

wonderful-australia-ph-4Dr. Supraja Dharini, Chairperson, Tree Foundation recently had a wonderful and unforgettable experience during her visit to Australia. She reached Townsville and then went for the wheeler reef trip, where she meet Rucha, a young girl at the Symposium from India, who had taken her to the REEF aquarium for an orientation and explained about the various coral reef structures and the reef fish. Dr.Supraja got to see a part of the Great Barrier Reef- a dream that became a beautiful reality. She visited JCU (James Cook University) and met few the marine biology doctorate students and Melbourne.
Along with some family friends, Dr.Supraja drove to Phillip Island (the sanctuary for the Fairy Penguins). She saw the little Penguins swim up from the surf and slowly walk up the shore and on to the cliffs where they have their chicks in burrows made in the sandy cliff. At Maru, a place just before Phillip Island, South Melbourne, Dr.Supraja said she had an amazing experience with the wild kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats and possums. Dr.Supraja said that at Nobbies Point the seascape was simply beautiful.
The Fairy penguins are the smallest of all penguins. She was amazed to see the little penguins not more than 13 inches tall walking up from the beach cross the stretch of sand and slowly climb up the sandy cliff and to their respective burrows nearly 200-300 meters from the tide. That night she watched about 4,000 penguins. There are estimate about 6000-7000 penguins to be in and around that sanctuary.
Dr.Supraja visited landfill to see how segregation of waste and recycling of all the different waste was done and how the energy form( co generation) the cement plants were used for the near by small industries. The power generated from the melting of waste plastic was used for the nearby county in Dandenog. She came back to Chennai with ideas for converting all the waste in our landfills in to resource. Supraja Dharini, Chairperson Tree Foundation can be contacted on 9444052242.
