Turning youngsters into professional cricketers: Iqbal

Cricket veteran M.K. Iqbal is the Director of AVM Childrens Cricket Foundation, located at 130, Avichi School Grounds, Arcot Road, Virugambakkam,Chennai-92.Mr.Iqbal, one of the most successful cricket players is well known for his cricket coaching skills. He is a highly talented, well experienced and most senior cricket coach having an excellent knowledge about the game of cricket. He trains and passes on his knowledge of the game to several youngsters so that in future, they could become shining stars of the Indian Cricket team. Mr.Iqbal, former Tamil Nadu Ranji Trophy cricket player and coach who represented the State in 1958, told Chennai Plus that he trains the youngsters not only in effective cricket playing strategies but also in leadership qualities, discipline, respect to elders and physical exercise. He said that courage, team spirit, quick thinking, alertness, and total involvement in the game are the most important qualities a cricketer should have. Mr.Iqbal always dreams of a bright future for his young cricketers and he pays important attention to character development. Indian Cricket Player Murali Karthick started his cricket career under the guidance of coach Mr.Iqbal.
Right from his young age MK Iqbal was interested in cricket. He was educated at Salem Municipality High School and Salem Municipal College. He was the captain of the School and College teams which won many cricket tournaments. He was selected for the Madras State Cricket team. Prior to Children’s Cricket Foundation MK Iqbal worked at Parry & Co from the year 1958 and played for the Parry cricket team for about 35 years. The team was successful in winning the Hindu Trophy for 3 years in a row. He also coached the Stella Maris College girl’s team which won the Inter College Women’s Cricket Tournament. In the year 1999 he established the AVM Children’s Cricket Foundation for conducting coaching classes for boys and girls at Avichi School grounds with the ardent support of AVM. Mr.Iqbal was invited as the Guest of Honour for the Middle East Nursery first sports meet at Majan College playground, Muscat. Mr.Iqbal was felicitated by the Oman Cricket Club for his long term dedication and service to cricket at an award ceremony held recently in Muscat. The Indian Ambassador for Sultanate of Oman, Anil Wadhwa presented him with a Shield in the presents of the elite cricketers for his efforts in promoting cricket especially among the youth in Chennai and at Muscat. Mr.Iqbal said that Sports brings values, unity and team spirit among the players. He suggested that the Indian Government could come forward to give scholarships and special bonus marks for students who perform well in sports and games. He also said that parents should encourage students to get involved in sports.
