The gauge conversion work at the three remaining metre gauge tracks at the Tambaram Railway Station is in progress and the work is expected to be completed shortly.
The aim of the conversion work undertaken by Southern Railway is to operate more broad gauge suburban trains on the Chengalpattu-Tambaram-Beach sector from platforms 3, 4 and 5.
There are nine platforms at the Tambaram Railway Station of which the first two are dedicated to suburban trains. The remaining four have been used mainly by long-distance mail and express trains and by some services from Tirumalpur and Chengalpattu.
Southern Railway officials told Chennai Plus reporter once the gauge conversion work is completed and dedicated for operating suburban electric train services, it will solve the problem of the broad gauge trains waiting at signal points on both sides of the Tambaram railway station for the platforms to become free from traffic, especially during rush hour for the benefit of the public.
