UTI’s Micro Pension Initiative A Pension Scheme For Unorganized Sector Workers

One in every 6 people over the age of 60 in the world live in India. Our current population of 8 crore elderly is going to witness a rapid growth and are likely to have nearly 20 crores elderly within the next 2 decades. Of the 36 crore paid workers in India today, only the 11% organised sector workers including government servants and salaried employees in large private firms enjoy pension rights and benefits. However most of the workers are employed in the unorganised sectors and have been generally excluded from formal pension and provident fund arrangements. If these workers do not have access to any formal pension scheme, many of them will have no option but to continue to work throughout their lives. The plight of our current aged is partly driven by our labour market structures. For the government, this is a very serious social and fiscal concern.

Traditionally most of us depend on the joint family system and expect support from our children when we stop working. But today our children are often forced to migrate when they start earning. So we can no longer depend on family support. To get over from these problems, UTI has launched a scheme for the benefit of the general public particularly workers in unorganised sectors making them financially independent. This scheme paves a way for them to save while they work and get the benefits at old age. The enrolled members in this scheme should have to contribute a small amount every month towards ‘UTI- Retirement Benefit Pension Fund’ upto the age of 55 years, and then they can receive pension in the form of periodical income /cashflow after they reach the age of 58 years.

The minimum amount of investment under this scheme is Rs.50/ and in multiples of Rs.50/ thereafter. Vegetable vendors, small service providers, home based workers, daily workers, rack-picker, stitching and embroidery workers and similar such people can get relief at the old age by this scheme.

Who can make their own living? The root cause to many problems in the society is ignorance and illiteracy. They have targeted the young minds to over come the issue, many of the kids do not know ABC though they have attended regular schools and they make sure these kids do not drop. They welcome likeminded people to join them in the venture and help them to see a developed India.
