Durga Matric. Hr. Sec. School was started on the auspicious day of ‘Vijayadasami’ on Oct. 5, 1965 in a very humble way at No.10, Corporation Colony, Kodambakkam, Power House, Chennai-24 by late Y.P.Ranga Rao. With in a short span of time, the school attained proper and consistent growth. Now it has branches at Nugambakkam and Alwarthirunagar.

The name ‘Durga’ means strength, stamina and stability. Durga stands for Discipline, Utility, Regularity, Goodness and Ability. The school makes every child a Durga (one with the above qualities).

Their avowed noble object is to train young children in the field of education to have an all round development of the individual. Their aim is to prepare young children, both boys and girls, academically, physically, psychologically and intellectually for their future. They strive hard to give them character, unity, sport, spirit, dedication to a cause, patronage and desire to serve the country to their utmost.

Each and every part of our body requires blood for its life. Blood is composed of many different materials and cells. It is the fluid part of the blood, called the ‘plasma’, which contains these materials. Carbohydrates, such as sugars, dissolved in the blood, give the body energy. Fats and salts are also there in the blood to meet the body’s needs. The blood plasma carries food from the stomach and intestine to the cells. It also carries waste from the cells to the kidneys and the intestine. The blood gets its colour from the red cells which are present in it. These cells contain a substance called ‘haemoglobin’, which combines easily with gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. The red cells carry the oxygen in the arteries and capillaries to all cells of the body. The blood also contains white cells called ‘leucocytes’, which destroy bacteria. Another category of white cells called ‘lymphocytes’ help our body in fighting infections.

There are other white blood cells, called ‘monocytes’ take care of dead material and dirt that may get into the body. Our blood also contains certain cells called ‘platelets’, which help to form clots when a blood vessel is cut, so that we do not lose much blood. Thus, blood is a vital component of our body.

Apollo Hospitals signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with US-based StemCyte.Inc on Wednesday to collaborate in the use of stem cell therapy in the treatment of patients with blood disorders such a leukemia.

According to the MoU, transplant physicians from Apollo will participate in the Fifth Annual International Cord Blood Transplantation Symposium sponsored by StemCyte in May. They will also undergo training in cord blood transplant through StemCyte’s training fellowship in either Taiwan or America.

Apollo will further have access to StemCyte’s inventory of over 26,000 cord blood units currently available worldwide, said Dr.Prathap C Reddy, executive chairman, Apollo, in a press release.

Cord blood is taken from the placenta and umbilical cord and is used as a source of stem cells for transplantation. Apollo is also exploring possibilities of creating a cord blood bank in the country which could set the corporate back by about $10 million, Dr.Reddy said.

At the end of a week-long door-to-door campaign for the second phase of the pulse polio drive, more than 5.45 lakh children have been immunized in the city. Through this, the campaign has achieved a coverage of 111.8 percent, better than the record of the last two years.

The second phase of the intensive pulse polio campaign, which was held on Feb. 11, had covered 4.78 lakh children with the booths achieving 95.70 percent. According to officials of the district Family Welfare Department, the coverage might have increased due to the extended duration of camps at important railway stations.

“Usually, the camp is held only for one day at railway stations. We requested authorities to extend it for two more days. Through these camps, we were able to cover migrating children”, an official said.

The first phase of the campaign was held on Jan. 7 and covered 5.22 lakh children. This witnessed a coverage of 108.20 percent, while the one in May reached 104.40 percent coverage.

Following completion of the second phase, officials will conduct a dipstick survey with random sampling to check for dropouts from the immunization programme.

“The survey would also be a source of awareness for the public. Two Maternity and Child Health Officers would be deputed to each zone. There are 10 health posts for each zone. They would select two health posts at random and conduct the survey among children”, the official added. The result of the survey would be know in a week. The prime aim of the survey was to cover dropouts of the immunization campain, officials said.

The Youth Red Cross of Women’s Christian College organized a blood donation camp to mark the beginning of lent, a season of fasting and charity for the Christians.

Over 60 girls donated blood as a lentil sacrifice.

The Velammal Matri. Hr. Sec. School, West Mogappair, celebrated their XVI annual day on Feb. 17 as ‘Infotainment’. The chief guests were Mrs.Jayanthi Natarajan, former Union Minister for Civil Aviation, and Padmashri Dr.Mayilvahanan Natarajan, HOD of Orthopaedic Surgery, Madras Medical College.

The school chairman Mr.M.V.Muthuramalingam gave away prizes, certificates and gold coins for students and teachers.

The annual report was read by principal Mr.C.Jeysankar and the keynote address was given by the CEO Mr.M.V.M.Velmurugan. The programme was co-ordinated by school correspondent Mr.M.V.M.Velmohan.

Colourful cultural programs by students formed a part of the function. Vice principal Mr.B.Raghupathy welcomed the gathering and vote of thanks was proposed by head mistress Mrs.S.Muzhumathi.

The two-day Education U.K. exhibition at Taj Coromandel brought in scores of students.

They rushed to the stalls, manned by representatives from 62 educational institutions, after the registration process. Representatives guided the students through the maze of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, briefed them about admission procedures and other requirements for studying in the U.K.

The representatives gave away pamphlets, brochures and CD-ROMs, and collected contact information of students at the exhibition.

Academic heads and British Council officials had a reason to offer about the swell of crowds: In the last few years they have seen an annual 18 percent increase in the number of students going from India to study in the U.K. For the current academic year, the British Deputy High Commission for south India issued more than 6,100 students visas, a 22 percent increase over 2005-06.

This year, the figure could go further up if one went by the tremendous response the fair had in the first few hours of Sunday afternoon.

The Teachers’ Recruitment Board (TRB) has released the list of candidates called for certificate verification for three different recruitments–postgraduate assistants for government higher secondary schools, lecturers and senior lectures for DTERT and DIET, and graduate assistants for government middle, high and higher secondary schools.
