Chennai city and its suburban areas have been blessed with several temples. Many of these places of worship have existed for hundreds of years. A few, however, cannot lay claim to such ancient beginings, having been constructed in the recent past. But these have proved to be a source of divine inspiration and for the prople around. The Attrukkal Sri Baghavathi Amman Koil located in Subash Nagar, I.C.F. Colony, Ambattur belongs to this category.
The origins of this temple make interesting reading. One Mr. Gopinathan hailing from Kerala and living in Subash Nagar, had a dream in which Sri Baghavathi Amman (deity in a temple near Trivandrum) directed him to build a temple in Chennai. Mr. Gopinathan acted as per the command and constructed a temple 20 years ago in a plot owned by him. He was lucky to get the co-operation of the public in this venture. Over the past 20 years temple worship has been going on here. After the demise of Mr. Gopinathan, Mrs. Suseela Gopinathan, as the temple trustee, took over the responsibility for maintaining the schedule of worship.
Now, efforts are being made to reposition deities according to Vastu Sastra and renovate the temple gopuram. This is prelude to the Kumbabhishekam planned to be held in the near future.
A dedicated team of office bearers and worshipers consisting of K.G.Sakthikanth (son of late Mr. Gopinathan), M. Natchadalingam and S.Janakiraman has been engaged in the task of carrying out all functions relating to the Kumbabhishekam. The temple, though small, has been attracting people in and around Ambattur.
The temple authorities want to have other deities like Vinayaka, Perumal, Subramaniya, Ayyappa, Durga and Anjaneya in the campus and are making provisions accordingly.
They appeal for donations from the public. These may be sent through cheque or demand draft or money order to the following address: Sri. M.Natchadalingam, 485, Tamil Nadu Housing Board Phase III, New Colony, Ambattur, Chennai 600 058. The Cheque/D.D may be drawn in favour of ‘Sri Baghavathi Amman Thirukoil’.
It is the earnest hope of the people in the area to see that the consecration function takes place as early as posssible.
