Neglected Kalyana Mandapam

The kalyana mandapam located in the Ayanavaram Railway colony premises is not maintained properly and needs to be renovated, remodeled and modernized. Moreover, it is surrounded by wild bushes and trees. There is also no proper approach road to the mandapam from the gate at Konnur High Road.

The colony resident told Chennai plus reporter, that the railway authorities should take care to improve and modernize the kalyana mandapam, because it is used by many of the southern railway employees for celebrating marriage functions and get-together parties etc.

Landmark building in Chennai City

The YMCA Madras Esplanade branch building is an important landmark building, which is a reflection of the rich heritage of India. According to official sources, it was established by David MC Conaughy during 1890 in the southern states of Madras province. It has successfully completed a century and has being rendering yeoman services to the community in and around the city. Bharatanatya Arangetram

Kumari Rekha’s bharatanatya arangetram is to be held today Sunday, 28th Oct evening at 6.15 p.m. at Karnataka Sangha (Ramarao Kalamantap), No.111, Habibullah Road, T.Nagar. Daughter of G.Ramasamy and Sukeshini, this 11th standard student of Maharishi Vidya Mandir, is the disciple of Bharataperunchudar Malathy Thothadri, director of Anna Nagar based Kalasagara, Academy of Perfoming Arts. This 36 year old Kalasagara is a landmark for performing arts like Bharatanatyam, Carnatic vocal music,violin, veena etc.

Rekha has been learning Bharatanatyam from her guru for the past seven years. Accompanying the arangetram are – Malathy Thothadri on nattuvangam & choreography, K.N.T Sasidaran on vocal, Vijaya Ragavan on mridangam, Kalaiyarasan on violin, C.K Pathanjali on flute, make up by R.K Mani, Costumes by D.A Aiyyelu and video & photography by Venkateswara Studio, Anna Nagar. Dr.K.A.Pakkiriswamy, principal, Tamilnadu Govt Music College, presides over the function. Swami Mitrananda, the Acharya of Chinmaya Mission, Chennai, has kindly consented to be the chief guest. Kumari Rekha has participated in many dance and music competitions and won many prizes in her school and outside. She is known for her artistic talent.

He obtained the ‘Ganabhooshanam’ title from the R.L.V Music College, Thirupunithura, Kerala and ‘Sangeetha Vidwan’ title from the Tamilnadu Government Music College, Chennai. He also underwent specialized training under Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Palghat Sri K.V.Nararyanaswamy.

Reji George has toured extensively all around the world giving solo concerts and singing for dance recitals. He has composed many compositions in music like Varnam, Jathiswaram, Thillana. Reji has given a concert at Rashtrapathy Bhavan, New Delhi in 1991 and has also done a music fusion programme for the American Red Cross Society towards their fund raising along with various other country musicians in the year 1998 – 1999 and he did the same fusion programme for the American Cancer Society in the year 2000. Reji has to his credit numerous concerts in India and abroad and has released a number of devotional and classical music cassettes and CDs.

Through his innovative compositions, Reji George continues to make significant contributions to Carnatic Music and classical dance. He has worked with the violin maestro Dr.L.Subramaniam in UK for the composition of musical dance opera “Taming the Shrew” (Shakespeare’s Drama) in the year 1989. Reji George is currently the director of ‘Maya’, a well known Carnatic Music School at Adyar in Chennai city. Reji George is interested in reading Vedas and religious books. He has a huge collection of carnatic music cassettes and CD’s at his home.

Speaking to Chennai Plus reporter, Reji George said that he is very interested to help and encourage the talented carnatic musicians who come from poor families.

The Chennai Corporation is updating the photo electoral rolls and informs the voters to submit their photographs if their pictures are not yet included in the electoral rolls.

Those who are yet to do so may submit or post their photos and the form to the district election office, Chennai Corporation, Ripon Building, Chennai before the 31st October 2007.

A Specialist And Creative Glass Artiste

Anjali Venkat, a resident of Besant Nagar is a specialist, expert and a very creative glass artiste. Anjali who is formally trained in commercial art has moved her focus to designing and creating home accessories since it is very important for her to be surrounded by things that are aesthetically appealing.

Speaking to Chennai Plus reporter, Anjali Venkat said that the art of stained glass has fascinated her since she was 10 years old. Her first encounter was with a Kileidoscope. She learnt to make glass art pieces with fused glass from the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. All the glasses on which Anjali works on, are imported from the United States of America.

Anjali Venkat likes experimenting and mixing different materials. For example, she uses antique Chettinad wooden pieces as lamp base for her stained glass lamp shades (or) she uses glass bangles to create elegant candle shelters etc. Anjali Venkat enjoys creating not only ethnic Indian art but also more contemporary pieces.

Anjali Venkat works with molten glass and also makes stained glass lamps and other artefacts. She has designed a wide range of handcrafted glass art works and stunning glass jewellery. Many of her splendid attractive glass art works are on display at her studio named Anjali Designs in Kalakshetra Colony. Anjali also takes time to conduct classes and workshops on glass art. A hurricane strokeful of an unbeaten 285 runs scored by opener Shikkar Hukku in just 116 balls in the opening partnership along with Weibllint, who made 60, not out, enabled St.John’s English School and Junior College, Besant Nagar, Chennai-90, to beat the Ashram School by 327 runs in the Godrej Round Robin League Interschool under-13 Cricket tournament played at Arevaa Tand D Ground. Shikkar is a very young cricket player. He is a hard hitting right hand batsman and a good medium pace bowler.
