The History And Achievement Of The Chennai City Police Force
The Greater Chennai Metropolitan Police Department has a rich history and a hi-tech feature. The Chennai Plus reporter, Elwyn recently visited the Chennai city police department, spoke to top senior police officers to bring out the history, development and achievements of the Greater Chennai Metropolitan Police.
According to the official police sources, the Greater Chennai Police, a division of the Tamil Nadu police, which is the law enforcement force of Chennai city, was establishment in the year 1659. It is reported that the commissioner of police and the administrative control vest with the Tamil Nadu home ministry.
Going back into the history of the Chennai city police, the post of the superintendent of police was created in the year 1780. After the Indian rebellion of the British raj in India, the modern Madras police was formed in the year 1857. According to police sources, Diwan Bahadur Parangusam Naidu is the first Indian to be appointed as the commissioner of police. P.B.Thomas became the first police officer to be appointed as the Inspector General of Police during the year 1919.
In the year 1951 the Madras Police Dog Squad was formed to help the policemen in prevention and detection of crime. In the year 1992, The first All Women Police Station was inaugurated at the Thousand Lights Police Station located on Greams Road, Chennai-6. The Chennai Metropolitan Police celebrated its 150 years of dedicated service in January 2007.
Today the All Women Police Station has been formed in each and every police station of Chennai city to take special care in the law and order problems faced by the women. In the year 2003, a mobile police station unit was inaugurated at the K4 Anna Nagar Police Station, Chennai-40. Moreover, about 80 highway patrol vehicles were introduced in the year 2003 to improve highway surveillance and to reduce road accidents. During the same year about 117 Police Boys Club were also opened all over the state.
Today, the Greater Chennai Metropolitan Police Force has the very best and latest spacious police station buildings, ultra modern police patrol stylish cars, latest scientific labs and special force teams etc. Chennai city has well trained policemen to maintain law and order, prevent crimes and experienced traffic policemen to effectively regulate the ever increasing vehicle traffic movement along the busy and narrow roads in Chennai city.
