Infrastructure development in railway department
![]()
The creation of the Southern Railway Zone in 14th April 1951 by merging three state railways viz. Madras South, Southern Mahratta and South India Railways, was a major step towards the infrastructure development in the southern railways department in the country. Now with the Tambaram Railway Station platform No.1 being developed into a two side platform for easy movement of passangers and also the current increase in the train service on the MRTS section upto Velachery gives the real estate and property developers more opportunities to showcase their creative projects in Tambaram and Velacherry areas.
There are more than 20,000 people now using the Tambaram - Chengelput train service per day. This number is going to increase by over 40 % in the next 5 years. Recently Mahindra World City Developers and Southern Railway joined hands to upgrade the Paranur Railway Station adjoining Mahindra City.
The MRTS project also called Chennai city flying train service upto St. Thomas Mount railway station is in progress. As per the railway sources, it would get completed in the year 2010 at a cost of over 496 crores. Let us take note that the MRTS phase I service till Mylapore - Thirumailai station started in the year 1997. Later the MRTS phase II till Velechery was opened for public use in the year 2007.
As per the MRTS project Phase III towards linking Velachery with St. Thomas Mount station, the railway sources have set up a plan and design to lay the railway tracks parallel to the road. It is stated that between the 5 km distance from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount railway station, there is going to be two new railway stations, viz. one at Puzhuthivakkam and another railway station in Adambakkam area.
If all goes well, St. Thomas Mount will soon become a major railway station. Apart from the MRTS service, metro railway lines one between Washermenpet and other between Fort to St. Thomas Mount have been finalized. This project would begin in 2008 – 09 and will be completed in 6 years.
The ever expanding and growing infrastructure development of the railway department is a big boon for the building and construction industry, which focuses to provide the best commercial and residential projects for the Chennai city residents. Let us remember that the railways have always played a major role in opening new avenues in the building and construction industry.
The infrastructure development in the railway department has been setting trends for the development of real estate in the country. The future development and improvement of the railway department will greatly boost the building and construction industry in the country.

there is an excellent progress of Phase III MRTS Velachery to St. Thomos Mount and Inner Ring Road at a length of about 4.5 KM.
Most important thing one to note is the MRTS Railway Station is expected to be located at Puzhuthivakkam and both ways there will be two Inner Ring Road (with of about 60 feet) and at one point there will be 4 + 4 ways - when project completed Puzhuthivakkam will be a feather in the crown of MRTS - Southern Railway.
Another Most important pont is at Puzhuthivakkam MRTS Station there will be about 9 to 10 Roads Joining at a Zebera Crossing, which no where in India ( I believe nowhere in the World also) one can find.
As I look at the overall view - I hope PUZHUTHIVAKKAM MRTS STATION is going to be an excellent location for CINEMA PRODUCERS both for love track as well as for fight track.
ONE NEED TO WATCH - IT IS GOING TO BE AN EXCELLENT ENGINEERING MARVEL OF MRTS AND SOUTHERN RAILWAYS SKILL - AND TO BE EXHIBITED WORLD OVER - THIS IS GOING TO BE A BIG SURPRISE FOR EVERYONE - IDON’T KNOW WHETHER PEOPLE HAVE VISULAISE THIS — STATION ARCH. WOULD HAVE CHOOSEN SUCH A LOCATION AND HIS WORK IS GOING TO BE TALK OF THE WORLD - IT IS A FACT.
