Saina is India’s top most badminton player. The 20-year-old Saina, is a native of Haryana and now training under another former top player Pullela Gopichand of Hyderabad.“The year so far has been great and amazing. I entered the semi-finals at All-England and ABC. My focus would now be on the next three weeks (Chennai, Singapore and Indonesia). After that I will take a break of four to six weeks and then prepare for the World Cup. I want to really do well in the World Cup, Commonwealth and Asian Games,†said Saina.
Though she is top seeded at Chennai in the India Open Gold Prix Gold Badminton Championships, Saina was guarded on how well she hoped to perform. “I will not say how far I can go in the tournament. All players are good fighters and I need to be alert from my very first match. If the draw goes well, I hope to play Sayali (Gokhale) in the quarterfinals,†Saina remarked. Taking her loss in the Asian Badminton Championships semi-finals to a qualifier in her stride, Saina said, “I made too many mistakes and allowed her to take a big lead. Though I tried to rally, it was too late.
I am focusing on my strokes during training and this can be seen on the court,†she added. Saina Nehwal, returning to Chennai, after five years was received with warmth by organizing secretary Ashok Bajaj, BAI secretary Punnaiah Chodhary and India junior coach Sanjeev Sachdeva.
