Dr S.Sunder is a Physiatrist and a rehabilitation professional. He started a charitable Trust in the year 1997, commemorating the 50th year of Independence under the name of Freedom Trust with a desire to promote, perform and carry out various charitable objectives for the welfare of economically backward disabled persons and to improve their living conditions. He is the Managing Trustee of the trust. Freedom Trust stands for Foundation for the Rehabilitation, Education and Empowerment of the Disabled of Madras.
The mission of Freedom Trust is to limit the disability of economically backward people with a desire to improve their quality of life, and make them independent. Rehabilitation and provision of locomotor aids can make a huge difference on a disabled persons future; a handicapped human being can be empowered to lead a good and dignified life in which he can contribute to society in his own abled way. The mission of Freedom Trust is to make this happen. Dr.S.Sunder is a specialist in Physical Medicine who established the Prem Center in Thiruvanmiyur in 1992 treating patients with chronic pain and paralysis. Over the years, Prem Center has grown into an established institution with 20 staff and 3 centers, including an Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, and treating over 120 patients a day.
Dr.Sunder has written the first Indian textbook in the field of Medical rehabilitation. He is a Consultant for several institutions and corporates, visited universities as invited lecturer, has presented several papers at various seminars. He has bagged the best paper award for his presentation at the International Conference in New Delhi in 1991. CIOSA, an institution serving NGO’s, honored him with the Dr.Sanjeevi award for social service. The Rotary club too recognized his contribution to society with the Rotary award for Vocational Excellence.
He has also been honored by the Indian Association for Occupational health with the National OHSF Award and the Raghaviah Memorial Oration for his contribution in the field of vocational rehabilitation. Dr. Sunder has been the guiding force behind the Freedom Trust and has pioneered several new concepts in the rehabilitation of the handicapped â€“ like Biofeedback and neuro developmental therapy. At his Prem Center, poor patients coming for physiotherapy and occupational therapy are treated free of cost, provided they are so recommended by the referring physician. Dr. Sunder is constantly into research and is the principal investigator for many trial studies in the fields of stroke, spinal cord injuries and so on.
The objectives of the Freedom Trust are to conduct medical camps using qualified Doctors, headed by Dr. Sunder and paramedical staff for the rehabilitation of the handicapped, to provide wheel chairs, tricycles, tripods, calipers, crutches and other locomotor aids for children, to take measurements for and provide calipers, artificial limbs, splints, collars and braces free of cost to the economically backward, to extend training & scholarship to exceptionally talented disabled children in the fields of arts, music & dance, to run an inpatient rehabilitation center for the economically backward sections and to train physiotherapists, orthotists, occupational therapists and special educators.
