On the occasion of the Republic Day 2013, the Government of India have announced award of medals for 24 officers of Tamil Nadu Police. Police officers are selected at all India level for this distinction and these medals are awarded twice a year on Republic Day and Independence Day. These medals, considered the highest honour for Police officers, are given taking into account overall performance, achievement and reputation.
Three Chennai Police officers have been awarded the Presidentâ€™s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. They are namely,Dr. C. Sylendra Babu, IPS.,Additional Director General of Police,Coastal Security Group CID, Chennai,Dr. Prateep V. Philip, IPS.,Additional Director General of Police,Crime, Chennai and A.M.S. Gunaseelan,IPS.,Inspector General of Police,Special Investigation Cell, V&AC,Chennai.Upgradation of skills of the Police personnel, improvement of infrastructure facilities, and change of attitude of the Police Force are essential ingredients in the process of the Modernisation of the Police Force.
The Tamil Nadu State Government had been providing a sum of Rs.10 crores to Rs.12.50 crores every year since 1993. In addition to the Government of India grant, the State Government has been putting up a matching amount for the Modernisation programme covering buildings, housing, mobility, communication, training, weapons, Finger Print Bureau / Forensic Sciences Lab, data processing, computerization and equipment.
