The flow of vehicle traffic at the Arcot Road-100 feet Road junction in Vadapalani, which is one of the most congested signal junction in the city, will soon be eased considerably. Thanks to an Rs 40-crore flyover to be built jointly by the State Highways department and the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) along the 100 ft Road at the junction.
According to official sources, a recent meeting between officials of the highways department and CMRL decided to build the structure below the elevated portion to be constructed for metro rail. CMRL is now working on the design.
The traffic police have already prohibited a right turn at the junction for vehicles going from Koyambedu towards Vadapalani and made a part of Arcot Road towards Kodambakkam from the junction a one-way stretch. Also, the police are diverting vehicles going to Vadapalani from Ashok Nagar through an interior road without touching the junction.
The flyover will be built on separate pillars from the middle of the road which will be alternatively positioned with Metro pillars. Chennai Metro Rail is expected to build a flyover at Vadapalani station.
This will be built to merge with other elevated corridors and stations. This comes in the wake of the highways department’s plans to build over passes to decongest traffic at Jawaharlal Nehru Road (100 feet road) near Arcot Road junction.
Metro Rail official stated that they have decided to construct the Vadapalani flyover because the structure will have to be integrated with the elevated corridors and stations being built by Metro Rail.
