Pedestrian overpasses and underpasses are built to ensure uninterrupted flow of traffic movement. The purpose of erecting a pedestrian overpass is to ensure safety of pedestrians. There is a number of pedestrian foot over bridges built along Chennai roads. But most of them are underutilized.
Many prefer the dangerous way of running across the road rather than climbing a few steps to get across safely. The feet over bridges at Nungambakkam, Old Mahabalipuram Road, Saidapet Taluk Office Road, near Little Mount are perfect examples of unutilized pedestrian facilities which were built using crores of rupees. Pedestrians, young and old, cross the road at ground level and almost no one use the overhead bridges on OMR.
At any time of the day, the 11 foot over bridges that dot the roughly 13-km stretch from Madhya Kailash to Sholinganallur are not made use off. It is a common sight to see people jump over the centre median and cross the road, just below the pedestrian over bridge facility.
Let the Traffic Police officials conduct campaigns to highlight the safety importance of using pedestrian over bridges and put an end to dangers of crossing between high speed moving vehicles.
