The First Stainless Steel, Alternate Current-Electrical Multiple Unit (AC-EMU Train) with Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) based 3 phase Propulsion system was flagged off by Shri Rakesh Misra, General Manager of ICF and Shri Rakesh Saksena, Chairman and Managing Director of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC)on 1st October 2013 at Integral Coach Factory, Furnishing Division, Chennai.
Shri.S.Sridhar,Chief Electrical Engineer,welcomed the gathering. Shri Pankaj Kumar, Chief Mechanical Engineer addressed the gathering and lauded the efforts of all the ICF employees for manufacturing the special newly designed 12 coach electric train.
The first AC-EMU train for Mumbai suburban network under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) phase-II, has been designed and manufactured at ICF,Chennai. The newly designed train will be added to the existing suburban fleet of trains in Mumbai.The train coaches have improved passenger amenities and will also provide better and comfortable travelling experience for the commuters.
Fluted panel for the roof, aerodynamic profile of driver cabin, forced ventilation system, passenger information system, PU foam cushioned first class the salient features of the train compartments. According to official Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation sources, Indian Railways, is a mammoth railway system that runs across the Indian subcontinent over 65000 kms of tracks, carrying 12 million passengers every day. In the commercial capital of India, namely Mumbai over 7.2 million users use the suburban railway system.
In order to meet the challenges and strengthen the railway network, a special purpose vehicle called Mumbai Vikas Corporation Ltd was set up on 12th July 1999. MRVC is responsible to execute the projects under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) as sanctioned by the Indian Railways.
MUTP projects are implemented in two phases namely, MUTP-I and MUTP-II. Under MUTP Phase-II, 72 twelve coach trains have been planned to be procured for Mumbai Suburban. A memorandum of understanding was signed between ICF and MRVC to manufacture AC-EMU trains with stainless steel car body and state of the art 3 phase propulsion with IGBT converter and three phase induction motor at ICF.
The first two prototype rakes are being turned out from ICF Chennai in 2013. ICF achieves yet another milestone adding a new chapter to its glorious past. The first AC-EMU train for Mumbai has been designed and manufactured by Integral Coach Factory, Chennai.
